Patient demographics are used by healthcare staff to identify a person and to access the correct healthcare information about them. Demographic data is held alongside the patient’s Community Health Index (CHI) number.
The NDP EMPI Service allows users of applications to retrieve search results for patient demographics based on either their CHI number or demographic fields such as name, date of birth and postcode. The applications return results from which users confirm and select the right patient.
The CHI number, along with patient demographics, also enables the retrieval and secure sharing of healthcare information between health and care departments.
Patient demographic data is captured when registering with a GP practice in Scotland.
Everyone registered with a GP practice in Scotland has their own CHI number, necessary for unique patient identification.
